Trust
Trust is first. Without it, a student will not feel safe to try things, to fail, and to learn. I will also trust my students by giving them responsibility and choice. "A love of learning has a lot to do with learning that we are loved" -Fred Rogers Confidence in Ability Having confidence in my students ability will inform how I interact with them. I will build up my students by how I talk to them. I will never give up on a student. Dignity Dignity is key in my understanding of childhood. In all my interactions with children, I will value them, their independence, their ability to choose. I will not demean them or talk down to them. Wonder A sense of wonder is what I believe drives learning. I will instill this in my students by integrating all areas of learning, and helping them to make connections between themselves and the content. I will integrate art into my teaching, providing my students with a creative outlet. I will present learning as something they get to do, rather than something they have to do so that they can take pride in what they do. |
My classroom and behavior management is based on positive discipline with influence form Maria Montessori. I strive to understand my students: where they are at developmentally, and what is motivating their behavior. I will focus on redirecting, giving choices, and respectful interactions.
"Discipline is, therefore, primarily a learning experience and less a punitive experience if appropriately dealt with." Maria Montessori |
"First foster the heart, then help the child acquire ability. This is indeed nature’s proper way.” -Shinichi Suzuki.
